The biggest challenge when studying music history - the most expensive of all theory subjects - is the cost of the four basic resources: text; scores; recordings; and review materials. As a result, most students purchase just the text and do not fully understand the music that they need to analyze and write essays about. The teacher is then left to provide the review materials, attempt to have the students listen to the music during lessons, and usually skip studying the scores altogether.

Longbow is committed to providing theory resources at a reasonable cost. To achieve this goal with the new editions, we plan to pay for royalties (scores and recordings) in larger quantities to keep the price down, and to utilize technology to avoid printing costs. This means taking advantage of: high-quality, online recordings; scores in PDF format (printable or to view on screen) stored on CD-ROM; and review disks instead of hard copy.

Furthermore, our new music history text editions have added features such as: ‘Find the Form’ so that the students can better understand the scores on the disk; caricatures of all the composers; hyperlinks on the disk for further studying/research; and a complete re-edit of all three books.

PLEASE NOTE: Mary Fraser's theory books will all be updated in fall 2010 and the full line available at that time.
